Acne is one of the most frequent requests in beauty centers and medical aesthetics practices. Combining blue and red light is now one of the most widely used LED protocols to support traditional treatments, without replacing them.
Cutibacterium acnes, the bacterium most involved in the formation of inflamed comedones, contains porphyrins that absorb light in the blue band, around 415-470nm. This absorption generates reactive oxygen species that damage the bacterial wall, reducing its load. It is a photochemical mechanism, not a thermal one: it does not burn or irritate the skin the way other more aggressive treatments can.
The most effective protocol alternates or combines blue light, for its antibacterial action, with red light at 630-660nm, which promotes tissue regeneration and reduces post-lesion inflammation, limiting the risk of residual marks. This is why multi-color devices, such as the FM5 Sensory helmet, have an advantage: they allow alternating wavelengths within the same session.
Typical protocols call for 15-20 minute sessions, twice a week in the initial phase, then at a maintenance frequency. It is not a stand-alone treatment: in most centers it works as a complement to facial cleansing and the cosmeceutical products already in use, increasing the perceived result of the overall path.
